Michael W. Baty, Attorney at Law

An avid outdoorsman and hard worker, Mike specializes in civil law. This includes real estate, personal injury, estate planning, probate, family law, appeals, contracts and business formation.

He received his B.S. from the University of Missouri in Forest Management, and went on to graduate with a J.D. from the University of Tulsa Law School. He also earned an M.B.A. while in law school achieving a dual degree while working part time, running marathons, and volunteering as the President of the Student Bar Association his senior year. He has also served as the President of the Southwest Colorado Bar Association and on many local nonprofit Boards in Durango.

Mike has practiced law in Colorado for over 34 years, coming to Durango in the early ’80s. His dedication to client well being goes beyond the Court system, and his long term clients know him to be a hard working, honest, and effective attorney who helps them navigate the legal system with frankness and responsibility.

Baty is known for his confidence, openness to creative strategies, and common sense approach to legal issues. His relationships with clients prioritize fairness in business practices and a commitment to ethical solutions between all parties involved. His professional reputation includes, but is not limited to, the following accomplishments:

  • Established law practice for over 33 years providing legal counsel to Colorado residents and businesses;
  • Over 1,000 client relationships served with legal services including real estate transactions, personal injury representation, family law negotiations, estate planning, and contractual development and legal review;
  • Hundreds of private, long-standing individual clients with established trust, continuing relationships, and on-going services being provided;
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate Court systems and settle out of Court when in the client’s best interest;
  • Three cases accepted by the Colorado Court of Appeals with two published opinions and a reversal of the lower Court opinion/Order;
  • One case accepted by the Colorado Supreme Court which reversed a published Court of Appeals opinion (Klingsheim).
